How to promote STE(A)Ms among primary school students?
How to provide multidisciplinary curricula by creating a bridge between creativity and science, human sciences and STE(A)M?

"IN2STEAM: Inspiring Next Generation of Girls through Inclusive STE(A)M Learning in Primary Education" is a three-year Erasmus+ KA201 project targeting primary school students in order to enhance innovative and gender inclusive educational approaches that integrates STE(A)M learning (applying art and design principles to science education) especially for female students, by reducing the gender gap in scientific career.

Activities carried out

From December 2021 to March 2022, the piloting phase of IN2STE(A)M got participation from more than 830 pupils and about 70 teachers from primary schools in Italy, Portugal, Cyprus, Poland, Turkey and Greece. The activities have been implemented within the IN2STE(A)M Labs, i.e. new laboratory spaces that replace the traditional lesson and allow learners to learn independently and cooperatively, in groups. Through a series of research activities, based on experimentation and analysis of problems, pupils had the opportunity to explore STE(A)M through the application of the scientific method and specific knowledge from the different disciplines. Most of the activities focused on the integrated and combined development of mathematical, technological and digital literacy, social and relational, artistic skills in order to foster the adaptability of the STE(A)M approach within primary schools. The IN2STE(A)M Labs got participation from 18 STE(A)M female professionals including educators, researchers and engineers who implemented a series of activities with the use of innovative methodologies such as coding, educational robotics, tinkering, design thinking, creative thinking, critical thinking. The results emerged from the Labs were summarized in the “IN2STE(A)M Impact Report” which also highlights the improvement of both cognitive and socio-emotional skills of students after their participation in the IN2STE(A)M Labs.

Achieved milestones

The partners of IN2STE(A)M are working on the “European Charter for STE(A)M education”, a document that will contain a series of tips and recommendations on how to integrate STE(A)M disciplines into school curricula, ensuring multidisciplinary and inclusive approaches for all pupils. In this regard, on 13 April 2022 a webinar was held in the presence of more than 50 teachers and STE(A)M professionals from the 6 countries of the partnership, to discuss about: STE(A)M education in primary schools, policies and good practices for an inclusive and gender-based approach in STE(A)M, key competences of teachers in STE(A)M, assessment and monitoring of competences in STE(A)M. The debate showed a relevant interest for STE(A)M education to improve students' transversal competences. At the same time, review school curricula so that they are no longer based on the achievement of performance and specific didactic goals. On the contrary, try to achieve a set of skills, intersectoral and easily exploitable in different disciplines and contexts.

Future activities

The "International Science Day" will follow on June 4 in the presence of international participants from Italy, Portugal, Cyprus, Poland, Turkey and Greece. The event will provide a unique opportunity to reflect on current and future challenges in STE(A)M education and spread out the outcomes of the project. In addition, several debates and conferences will be organised in all countries, following up on results at both international and local/national level.
